Sophomore quarterback Jacurri Brown continued to struggle with accuracy in the Miami Football scrimmage on Saturday. True freshman QB Emory Williams doesn’t have the athleticism that Brown has but is far more accurate. With the season opener less than three weeks away, Williams is pushing Brown on the depth chart.

Brown was seven of 16 for 57 yards with six carries for a loss of three yards, after completing nine passes in 17 attempts for 74 yards in the spring game. Williams completed seven passes in eight attempts for 87 yards with three carries for a loss of 11 yards. Williams is not known for his running ability.

In the spring game, Williams completed all four of his pass attempts for 42 yards. The competition to be the primary backup QB on the Miami football team is becoming more competitive than expected. Brown completed 60.0 percent of his passes for 230 yards, three TD and three interceptions in 2022.

Brown also ran 54 times for 223 yards in 2022. The 5.9 yards per attempt that Brown averaged last season were anemic and would have placed him outside of the top 100 nationally. Only 13 teams nationally averaged 5.9 yards per attempt or less. Miami needs Brown to improve his passing efficiency to be a viable backup.

Christopher Stock of Inside the U reported that Brown missed his first four passing attempts on Saturday and failed to lead a TD drive in any of his six series. Andres Borregales had a 54-yard field goal to cap one Brown drive. The inability of Brown to break a big run is also discouraging.

The strength of Williams’ game is his accuracy. Williams completed 63.2 percent of his passes in high school. Williams improved his accuracy all three years in high school, capped by completing 69.2 percent of his passes as a senior in 2022. Willams has a lot of traits that scouts look for at 6’5 and 220 pounds.

The scouting report from Andrew Ivins of 247 Sports states Williams is a pocket passer with the ability to pick up positive yardage on the ground when he needs to. Williams also competed in track and field in high school. As a senior Williams had 16 TD passes and only three interceptions. Miami gets an efficient passer with Williams.
