The Miami football program is in good shape for five-star defensive tackle David Stone ahead of his Saturday commitment announcement per Steve Wiltfong the 247 Sports Director of Football Recruiting. Oklahoma has long been considered the favorite to gain a commitment for Stone.

Wiltfong posed the question “Could Miami pull off a stunner?” The answer for Wiltfong was yes. No program is recruiting Stone harder than Miami per Wiltfong. Stone’s family loves Coral Gables, the small class size and the academics. Stone wants to become a doctor after his playing career is over.

Earlier this week, Stone told Wiltfong his favorite thing about the Miami football program is the coaching staff. As a defensive tackle, Stone would work with defensive line coach Joe Salave’a as his position coach. Wiltfong stated, “Don’t discount the Hurricanes in the days leading up to the decision.”

Michigan State is the third school in the Stone recruitment. Expect the Hurricanes, Sooners, or Spartans to gain the commitment from Stone. On3 projects Oklahoma as the overwhelming favorite for Stone with a 79.1 percent chance for a commitment. Michigan State is second at 15.4 percent.

Another thing that could work in Miami’s favor in Stone’s recruitment is that he was teammates with Hurricanes’ freshmen, offensive linemen Francis Mauigoa and Antonio Tripp, edge rusher Jayden Wayne and tight end Riley Williams at IMG Academy. Wayne could particularly play a key role.

Stone had 25 tackles, eight tackles for loss 0.5 sacks and three quarterback hurries in four games for IMG Academy last season according to MaxPreps. The 247 Sports composite rankings list Stone as the sixth prospect, second DL and third in Florida in the 2024 class. Miami currently has the 15th-ranked class nationally.

Miami will also find out the fate of four-star safety Zaquan Patterson on Saturday. There are conflicting reports regarding Patterson. Miami was long the favorite for Patterson. Florida State has gained recently and is reportedly expected to gain the commitment from Patterson.
