The Miami Hurricanes Football program had a mixed day of news with a commitment from consensus four-star safety Zaquan Patterson from Chaminade-Madonna and five-star IMG defensive tackle David Stone committing to Oklahoma. Patterson’s moved Miami to the 14th-ranked 2024 recruiting class.
Patterson announced his decision first in the 35-14 win for Chaminade-Madonna on ESPN2 on Saturday afternoon. Stone initially grabbed the Miami hat before committing to Oklahoma. Patterson is the second highest-rated commit in the 2024 class to his Chaminade-Madonna teammate, wide receiver Joshisa Trader.
Patterson is the highest-rated defensive commit in the 2024 Miami class per the 247 Sports composite rankings. The commitment from Patterson gives Miami four safeties in the 2024 class. Patterson is the 78th prospect, fourth safety and 11th-ranked player in the 2024 class per the 247 Sports composite rankings
Patterson brings a physical presence at safety to Miami who should have an opportunity to play as a freshman. In the last two seasons, Patterson has recorded 138 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, four sacks, three interceptions and three pass breakups according to Max Preps. Miami potential has an elite secondary in the 2024 class.

Stone chose Oklahoma over Miami and Michigan State. Stone is from Oklahoma. The 247 Sports composite rankings list Stone as the sixth-best prospect, second DL and third player in Florida in the 2024 class. Stone would have potentially given Miami the best DL class in 2024. Without Stone, Miami still has an elite 2024 DL class.
Miami has commitments in the 2024 class from four-star defensive linemen Artavius Jones, Marquis Lightfoot and Elias Rudolph and three-star Daylen Russell. Expect Miami to add at least another pair of DL in the 2024 class and to target several more in the transfer portal as they did this past offseason.
Steve Samra of On3 summarized the thoughts of Rece Davis, Kirk Herbstreit, Desmond Howard and Pat McAfee on the inaugural ESPN College Gameday in the Studio on Saturday. All four preached patience for the Miami Hurricanes football program. McAfee expects Miami to be more exciting in 2023.
