Gaby Urrutia of Inside the U reported on Wednesday afternoon that the Miami football program has added 6’3 and 309-pound Alabama transfer defensive tackle Jamil Burroughs. In three seasons at Alabama, Burroughs totaled 15 tackles, three tackles for loss and two sacks over 20 games.

Urrutia mentioned that Burroughs has been practicing with Miami all week. Burroughs played 161 snaps for Alabama in 2022 per Urrutia. Against Mississippi State last season, Burroughs set a career-high with five tackles and added a half tackle for loss, half a sack and one quarterback pressure.

Burroughs was a four-star signee with Alabama in 2020. The 247 Sports Composite rankings listed Burroughs as the 347th prospect, 34th defensive tackle and 34th player in Georgia out of Powder Springs McEachern. Nick Alvarez of Al.Com reported that Burroughs will likely need a waiver to play this season.

Players who enter the transfer portal after April 30 need a waiver to play the following season. Burroughs entered the transfer portal in June after reportedly getting into an altercation with Alabama director of player development Josh Chapman. Miami guard Javion Cohen was teammates with Burroughs at Alabama.

Burroughs should have three seasons of eligibility remaining including 2023. As a 2020 signee, Burroughs’ true freshmen season did not count against his eligibility. Burroughs played in three games in 2021 and took a redshirt season. In 2022, Burroughs played in 11 games in what should have been as a redshirt freshman.

Purdue transfer Branson Deen and Leonard Taylor are the projected starting DTs for the Miami football team in the season opener versus Miami (Ohio) on Friday. Miami returns Jared Harrison-Hunte, Jacob Lichtenstein and Ahmad Moten at DT. Georgia State transfer Thomas Gore is also expected to contribute at DT.

Miami is likely to lose Harrison-Hunte and Taylor after the 2023 season. Deen is entering his final season of college eligibility. Four-star prospect Artavius Jones and three-star Daylen Russell are projected DTs committed to Miami in the 2024 class. Miami also has Louisiana transfer Anthony Campbell on the 2023 roster.
