Miami Hurricanes News: Season opener eve, new transfer addition
We are one day away from the start of the Miami Hurricanes football season. Miami will kick off on Friday night at 7 PM. Former Alabama defensive tackle Jamil Burroughs has transferred to Miami according to Gaby Urrutia of Inside the U. It’s unknown if Burroughs will be eligible to play during the 2023 season.
Final preparations are being made by the Miami Hurricanes football team with seven assistant coaches and 41 players on the roster new Hurricanes in 2023. All the various media outlets that cover Miami have posted their takes on the game on Friday night. In the second second under Mario Cristobal, it’s a new era.
The focus will be on new defensive coordinator Lance Guidry and new offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson. Guidry is working with a largely new group of cornerbacks. Offensively the focus will be on how well does the largely new Miami offensive line protect quarterback Tyler Van Dyke.
Burroughs has been transferring with Miami all week per Urrutia. A 2020 signee with Alabama, Burroughs should have three seasons of eligibility remaining. Burroughs redshirted in 2021 after receiving the extra year of eligibility in 2020. Burroughs played 11 games for Alabama in 2022.
Miami is 12th in the 2023 247 Sports team talent composite rankings. Chris Hummer of 247 Sports wrote that Miami has been in the top 20 of the composite rankings every year since 2018, but that the 2020 season when the Hurricanes finished 8-3 is their only year in that span winning at least 60 percent of its games.
Dan Morrison of On3 wrote that “Mario Cristobal expresses confidence in Emory Williams, Jacurri Brown as backup quarterbacks.” Brown and Williams have a topic of discussion this week after CaneSport broke the story that starting QB Tyler Van Dyke suffered thumb injury during practice on a teammates’ helmet.
Canes County Publisher Marcus Benjamin examined “Why Miami Football should be confident with coordinator choices.” Benjamin wrote reasons to be excited about the offense and defense entering the 2023 season. Benjamin analyzed the past histories for Dawson and Guidry.
