CFB analyst names Francis Mauigoa future superstar
Miami true freshman starting right tackle Francis Mauigoa graded out well as a pass blocker and was mediocre as a run blocker according to the ratings from Pro Football Focus. In his “Notable newbies: Colorado’s Travis Hunter, Shedeur Sanders steal show in Week 1″ Chance Linton of 247 Sports named Mauigoa a future superstar.
Mauigoa played in 61 snaps in his collegiate debut per Chris Stock of Inside the U. All five Miami starting offensive linemen played 61 snaps on Friday night. The 61 snaps from the five-starting OL led Miami. Quarterback Tyler Van Dyke with 54 snaps was the only other Miami player with more than 50.
As a true freshman in his first collegiate game, Mauigoa more than held his own. Mauigoa helped the Miami offense gain 243 yards rushing and 250 passing. The Miami OL limited Miami (Ohio) to one tackle for loss and one sack. Mauigoa was one of only two Miami true freshmen to have over 20 snaps.
True freshman cornerback Damari Brown played 22 snaps. Miami averaged 6.94 yards per carry on Saturday which ranks ninth nationally. Miami averaged 3.74 yards per carry in 2022, which was 95th nationally. The Hurricanes were 100th nationally in 2022 allowing 3.0 sacks per game.

With Mauigoa and fellow five-star freshman offensive tackle Samson Okunlola, Miami projects to have one of the best bookends on their line in the next year or two. Okunlola played four snaps on Friday night. Miami will likely ride their starting five OL during the 2022 season. Okunlola will be in the short rotation among backups.

Mauigoa was named by 247 Sports as a preseason All-American. After one game, he has room to improve. The game versus Texas A&M on Saturday will be a huge early-season test for Mauigoa. Texas A&M has a defensive line loaded with blue-chip players. Miami will have to minimize the Aggies’ DL getting to Van Dyke.
