"The OL had so many injuries last year, though, and was on their third coach in four years—so a glass-half-full approach would tack the issues on those factors, as the raw talent up front would make one think the play should be far better than where it was. The run defense had been a strength under (former defensive coordinator Mike) Elko, but there was not only a switch at coordinator from ‘21 to ‘22, but also a LOT of turnover in the front seven. The youth that came in was extremely talented, but being gap sound is a lot tougher in college than it is in high school. In addition—and maybe this has to do with the amount of injuries the Aggies suffered across the board in 2022—there came a point where it seemed like the defense just couldn’t tackle anymore. In the Ole Miss game from last year, there were so many missed tackles that it became tough to watch. Now, in the LSU game at the end of last year as well as the opener in ‘23, they looked much better in that regard, so Aggies everywhere are hoping that’s been rectified."
