Miami football helps lead ACC over SEC
Before the inaugural ACC-SEC challenge this fall in basketball, the conferences have had a half dozen football games during the first three weeks of the 2023 season. The 48-33 win by the Miami football team over Texas A&M last week helped the ACC win four of six games versus the SEC early this season.
The win by the Miami football team over Texas A&M ended a five-game losing streak to the SEC. Miami previously defeated an SEC team with a 21-16 win over Florida in 2013. Miami beating Texas A&M also ended a five-game losing streak versus non-conference Power Five opponents.
In week one, Virginia lost 49-13 to Tennessee, North Carolina defeated South Carolina 31-17 and Florida State pulled away in the second half for a 45-24 win over LSU. The Seminoles won both games against the Tigers in the last two seasons. Miami beat Texas A&M and Wake Forest won 36-20 over Vanderbilt in week two.
Georgia Tech lost 48-23 to finish early non-conference play against the SEC. Traditional ACC-SEC rivalries remain in week 15. Georgia Tech hosts Georgia, Florida State will play at Florida, Kentucky is at Louisville and Clemson travels to South Carolina. The latter three ACC teams are significant favorites per the ESPN FPI.
The Miami football program has several games scheduled versus SEC teams in the future. Miami will begin the 2024 season at Florida on August 31. Florida plays at Miami on September 20, 2025. Miami begins the 2026 season on September 5 at South Carolina and hosts the Gamecocks in 2027.
Miami also has a two-game series with Auburn in 2029 and 2030. The Hurricanes have four non-conference games scheduled in 2024 and 2026. Miami hosts Florida A&M and Ball State in 2024 before traveling to South Florida. After opening at South Carolina, Miami hosts FAMU and Central Michigan and plays at Notre Dame in 2026.
Miami has a blockbuster non-conference schedule in 2025 with home games versus Florida, Notre Dame and South Florida. The future Miami football schedules are likely to evolve with the ACC adding California, SMU and Stanford joining the ACC in 2024. Expect the ACC to eventually expand to a nine-game conference schedule.
