Miami football 1 of 2 teams top 15 nationally offensively and defensively
The Miami football team is one of two teams in the top 15 nationally ranked in scoring and yards offensively and defensively. Miami is seventh in points per game, tied for 13th in points allowed per game, eighth in total offense and 13th in yards allowed. Syracuse is the only other team in the top 15 in all four categories.
Syracuse is sixth in scoring offense, seventh in points allowed, ninth in total offense and 15th in total defense. Georgia, Oklahoma, Oregon and Penn State are in the top 15 in three of the four combined defensive and offensive categories. The Bulldogs are 18 in total defense, just missing the top 15.
Georgia is 14th in scoring offense, 10th in scoring defense and 13th in total offense. Oklahoma is fourth in scoring offense, second in scoring defense and 10th in total offense. The Sooners are 33rd in total offense. Oklahoma is fifth with a 1.75 per-game turnover margin to overcome allowing 309.5 yards per game.
Oregon is second in scoring and total offense and 11th in total defense. The Ducks barely sit outside the top 15 ranking 17th in scoring defense. Oregon has allowed 10 points or less in three of its four games. Texas Tech was the outlier. Oregon won 38-30 at Texas Tech in its only road game thus far in 2023.
Penn State is 15th in scoring offense, fourth in scoring defense and first in total defense. The Nittany Lions rank 33rd in total offense. Penn State has taken advantage of the opposition with a plus 2.75 turnover margin. Penn State has scored at least 30 points and allowed 15 or fewer in all four of its games.
Several of the teams ranked in the top 15 offensively and defensively are on the 2023 Miami football schedule. Florida State who Miami plays on November 11 is eighth nationally in scoring offense. Miami hosts Louisville on November 18. The Cardinals are ninth in scoring offense and fifth in total offense.
Texas A&M ranks 14th in total defense. Miami scorched the Texas A&M defense for 451 total yards and 41 points in a 48-33 win on September 9. The Hurricanes also had a kick return touchdown by Breshard Smith. Texas A&M is allowing 7.66 points per game and 214.67 yards in its other three games in 2023.
The hiring of Shannon Dawson as offensive coordinator and Lance Guidry as defensive coordinator have made a huge impact for the Miami football program in 2023. Miami finished 65th or below in all four major defensive and offensive categories in 2022. The Hurricanes have looked like a different team in 2023.
