Miami basketball: Nijel Pack named top 10 2023-24 point guard
The Miami basketball team has earned their latest recognition with Nijel Pack being named the third-best point guard nationally entering the 2023-24 season by analyst Andy Katz. Pack is not a traditional point guard in the system run by Jim Larranaga. Miami utilizes multiple ball handlers, playmakers and shooters.
Pack averaged 13.6 points per game 2.7 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.0 steals and shot 44.1 percent from the floor, 40.4 percent on threes and 88.2 on free throws in his first season with Miami in 2022-23. Post Norchad Omier and Pack are the foundation the 2023-23 Miami basketball team will be built on.
Miami also returns guards Bensley Joseph and Wooga Poplar. Florida State transfer forward Matthew Cleveland is the projected fifth starter for Miami in 2023-24. Joseph is a more traditional point guard. Joseph moving into the starting lineup could free Pack for more shots this season.
Pack was second on Miami in 2022-23 averaging 11.2 field goal attempts per game. ACC Player of the Year Isaiah Wong led Miami averaging 11.6 field goal attempts per game last season. Pack should lead Miami in field goal attempts in 2023-24. Katz posted a video of his top 10 point guard entering the 2023-24 season.

Omier and Pack were critical additions to the Miami basketball program as transfers during the 2022 offseason. Pack was the NCAA Tournament Midwest Region Most Outstanding Player as Miami advanced to the Final Four for the first time in program history. Pack is one of three ACC point guards on Katz’s list.

Judah Mintz of Syracuse is the second-best point guard in the country and Tyrese Proctor of Duke is sixth in Katz’s rankings. Miami plays at Syracuse on January 20 and hosts Duke on February 21. Miami will enter the season 10th in the CBS Sports Top 25 And 1 rankings and 18th in the ESPN Way-Too-Early Top 25.Â
