Three turnovers, with two in the third quarter, did the Miami football team in as North Carolina outscored Miami 21-0 and outgained the Hurricanes 182 to 32 in the third quarter turning a 17-14 halftime deficit on their way to a 41-31 win on Saturday night in Chapel Hill. Miami’s mistakes did them in.

On a night when North Carolina had 14 penalties for 147 yards, the turnovers were the biggest factor Miami lost. The first turnover came in the first half with Miami down 7-0. After a six-play, 89-yard drive to the North Carolina one, Henry Parrish fumbled inside the one and the Tar Heels recovered.

The second turnover came in the third quarter following a bad exchange between center Matt Lee and quarterback Tyler Van Dyke. The Miami football team forced a North Carolina punt. On the first play following the punt, North Carolina linebacker Cedric Gray intercepted Van Dyke at the Miami 23 yardline.

North Carolina QB Drake Maye threw his second touchdown pass of the third quarter to Tez Walker to extend the North Carolina lead to 28-17. North Carolina scored its third TD of the third quarter on an Omarion Hampton three-yard run to extend the lead to 35-17 and essentially put the game out of reach.

North Carolina kept the game at least two to three scores with two field goals in the fourth quarter. Van Dyke threw fourth-quarter TD passes to Xavier Restrepo and Breshard Smith. After holding Maye in the first half, the Heisman Trophy candidate shredded the Hurricanes in the second half. Miami finished with four turnovers.

Van Dyke appropriately threw an interception on the final play with Miami driving for what would have been a cosmetic TD. Van Dyke finished 31-48 for 391 yards, four TDs and two interceptions. Maye was 17-33 for 273 yards, four TDs and no interceptions. Maye was 9-14 for 168 yards, three TDs and no INTs in the second half.
