Miami Hurricanes News: Midseason grades, what needs fixing
After the loss to North Carolina on Saturday, the Miami Hurricanes football team reached the halfway point of its season. Local and national sites have examined Miami after a 4-2 start. Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald wrote “The Hurricanes say these are the two issues badly hurting them. And UM personnel notes.“
David Lake of Inside the U examined the “Midseason Report: Miami looking to show year-over-year improvement during ACC play.” Lake divided his midseason report into about 15 topics. Among the topics Lake analyzed were naming wide receiver Xavier Restrepo and which games to watch in the second half.
Edge rusher Rueben Bain and right tackle Francis Mauigoa were named to the 247 Sports “Midseason True Freshman All-American Team for 2023.” Bain is among the Miami team leaders in tackles, tackles for loss and sacks. Mauigoa has started every game at right tackle and is the highest-graded freshman offensive lineman.
Frank Tucker of CanesCounty wrote “The History of Mario Cristobal Indicates Patience is Needed.” Tucker examined the rebuilds Cristobal led at FIU and Oregon. The Final Thoughts from Tucker focused on the Miami Hurricanes recruiting classes and the improvements he led at FIU and Oregon.
Jackson summarized the comments from Cristobal on Hurricane Hotline. Cristobal was quoted by Jackson discussing that Miami has a top-20 defense and offense but is being hindered by penalties and turnovers. Miami has committed nine turnovers in the last two games and is 120th nationally in penalties.
Alex Donno of All Hurricanes wrote “Hurricanes OC: Miami Hasn’t Faced A Defense As Good As Clemson’s.” Donno quoted Shannon Dawson from his press conference on Monday. Clemson leads the ACC allowing 261.8 total yards per game and is fourth allowing 19.3 points per game. Miami will be challenged offensively.
Jamie Shaw of On3 named Miami guard Kyshawn George seventh among “The Ten Most Impactful Freshmen in the ACC for the 2023-24 Season.” Shaw is the latest writer to report that George has quickly made an impact with the Miami basketball team during fall practice and is expected to be a part of the rotation.
