Despite sitting out the win over Clemson on Saturday, Miami quarterback Tyler Van Dyke leads the ACC in several categories. With Van Dyke out versus Clemson, Miami offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson had an extremely conservative game plan against the Tigers, particularly in the first half.

Tyler Van Dyke is having his most efficient collegiate season. Van Dyke has career highs with a 70.5 completion percentage, 9.4 yards per attempt and a 171.8 passer rating. Van Dyke is also on pace for career highs in passing touchdowns and yards. Miami is in the top five in the ACC in multiple passing categories this season.

Mario Cristobal stated earlier this week that he expects Van Dyke to play on Saturday versus Virginia. Van Dyke needs to cut down on interceptions that plagued him in losses to Georgia Tech and North Carolina. Despite throwing for 679 yards and five touchdowns versus UNC and Georgia Tech, Van Dyke also threw five interceptions.

Those mistakes contributed significantly to the losses to Georgia Tech and UNC. Van Dyke is second in the ACC behind Drake Maye of North Carolina averaging 286.8 passing yards per game. In his breakout 2021 season, Van Dyke averaged 293.1 passing yards per game under former offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee.

In the first four games this season, Van Dyke had 11 TD passes and one interception. Van Dyke had his best game of the season completing 21 passes in 30 attempts for 374 yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions in a 48-30 win over Texas A&M. Miami matched its season high point total in a 48-7 win over Bethune-Cookman.

Miami is second in the ACC averaging 481.9 total yards per game. In the six games that Van Dyke has started in 2023, Miami has had at least 451 yards in every game. The five teams Miami plays in the rest of the season rank fourth through ninth in the ACC in pass defense. Van Dyke and the Miami pass offense will be challenged.
