Somehow Miami football pulls out overtime win over Virginia

The Miami football team overcame two Tyler Van Dyke interceptions and were outgained by over 100 yards, but a Mark Fletcher 11-yard touchdown run in overtime gave the Hurricanes a 29-26 overtime win over Virginia. Miami won for the second straight week in overtime to improve to 6-2 overall and 2-2 in the ACC.

The Miami defense forced a field goal on Virginia’s overtime possession before the Fletcher TD run for the walk-off score. Virginia outgained the Miami football team 377-276. After trailing 10-3 at halftime, Miami scored two TDs in seven seconds to take a 17-10 lead in the third quarter.

Virginia rallied with a FG and TD on its next two drives to take a 20-17 lead. Miami tied the game at 20 and again at 23 after Virginia took the lead. Andres Borregales made 47, 50 and 48-yard field goals in the game to put Miami in position to win in overtime. Borregales made all three of his FG attempts.

Virginia scored on their opening drive of the game after forcing Miami to punt. A Mike Hollins one-yard run gave Virginia the early lead. Miami and Virginia traded field goals in the second quarter to give the Cavaliers the 10-3 halftime lead. The Hurricanes seemed to gain control after the two quick TDs in the third quarter.

Ajay Allen kept Miami in the game early with a spectacular 26-yard TD run in the third quarter to tie the game. The Allen TD preceded a 29-yard interception return for a TD by Kamren Kinchens seven seconds later. That was the last Miami TD until the Fletcher run in OT. Allen led Miami with 11 carries for 67 yards and the TD.

Fletcher finished with 11 carries for 47 yards and the game-winning TD. Fletcher had three carries for 25 yards in the overtime to carry Miami to the win. Miami got Fletcher back for the first time in over a month after he was out with an injury. The Miami depth at running back has been critical this season.

James Williams led the Miami defense with 13 tackles. Corey Flagg had 10 tackles and a tackle for loss a week after having the overtime game-winning stop. Kinchens had nine tackles, 0.5 TFLs, the critical interception and a pass breakup. Several other Miami defenders had big games in the win.

The win over Virginia was the penultimate 2023 Miami home game. Miami is at North Carolina State next week and Florida State on November 11 before returning home to host Louisville on November 18. Miami plays at Boston College on November 24 to finish the regular season.
