Miami had one of its greatest and most controversial wins in the 1991 Cotton Bowl. Miami thoroughly dominated Texas 46-3 in front of a partisan crowd in Dallas. Miami had 15 penalties for 202 yards and Randall Hill drew criticism for using faux six shooters after a TD. Texas entered the game 10-1 and Miami was 9-2.

Miami QB Craig Erickson earned the Cotton Bowl offensive MVP and defensive tackle Russell Maryland was the defensive MVP. Erickson was 17-28 for 272 yards and four TDs with two going to Wesley Carroll. Linebacker Darrin Smith added a 34-yard interception return for a TD early in the third quarter.

The 37-14 win over Nebraska in the 2002 Rose Bowl is arguably the signature victory in the history of the Miami football program. Miami led 34-0 at halftime and cruised to the easy win. Miami concluded one of the greatest seasons in college football history as the consensus best team ever.

The 2001 Miami football team had 38 players who were eventual NFL draft picks, including 17  in the first round. Miami was unquestionably the most talented in the history of college football in 2001. The culmination in the 2001 National Championship was in the middle of a 34-game winning streak.
