No game or stadium has had greater significance for the Miami football program than the Orange Bowl. Miami began its 20-year dominance of college football by upsetting what was then labeled as the best team in history, Nebraska. The Hurricanes shocked college football with a 31-30 win over Nebraska in the 1984 Orange Bowl.

Miami won its second national title and only one under Jimmy Johnson in the 1988 Orange Bowl. The Hurricanes entered the 1988 Orange Bowl ranked second nationally and a three-point underdog to Oklahoma. Miami stifled Oklahoma as neither team gained 300 yards in a 20-14 Hurricanes win.

Miami won its third national title 22-0 over Nebraska in the 1992 Orange Bowl as a 10-point favorite. The Hurricanes outgained the Cornhuskers 439-171. Miami freshman fullback Larry Jones ran for 144 yards and a touchdown to earn the 1992 Orange Bowl MVP. Miami DE Rusty Medearis had four sacks.

Miami is 6-4 all-time in the Orange Bowl game. The most recent appearance for Miami was a 34-24 loss to Wisconsin in 2017. That was only one of two Orange Bowl appearances for Miami since the game moved to Hard Rock Stadium in 1996. Miami defeated Florida State 16-14 in the 2004 game.
