Miami football: Palm Festival appearances

Miami has appeared in several defunct bowl games. Miami’s first bowl win occurred in its inaugural postseason game 7-0 over Manhattan in the 1933 Palm Festival. The Palm Festival is not recognized by the NCAA as a bowl game but is listed in the Miami football media guide as its first bowl win.

Miami lost 33-7 to Duquesne in the 1934 Palm Festival. The Hurricanes finished the 1933 season with five wins, one loss and two ties. Miami had five wins, three losses and one tie in 1934. The success of the Palm Festival led the the berth of the Orange Bowl game in 1935. The NCAA recognized the Orange Bowl.

Gotham Bowl

Miami lost to Nebraska 36-34 in the 1962 Gotham Bowl in the second and last year the game was played. The Gotham Bowl was the first of seven bowl games between Miami and Nebraska. Miami has played Nebraska five times in the Orange Bowl and once in the Rose Bowl in the 2002 BCS National Championship Game.

Bluebonnet Bowl

A 31-21 loss to Colorado in the 1967 Bluebonnet Bowl was the last postseason appearance for Miami until the 1981 Peach Bowl. Miami finished the 1967 season 7-3 following the loss to Colorado. Miami had 233 total yards, nine penalties for 75 yards and were 2-12 on third down in the loss to Colorado.

Emerald Bowl

The Emerald Bowl was known by multiple different names from 2002 through 2019. Miami made its sole appearance in the Emerald Bowl in a 24-17 loss to California in 2008. After falling behind 14-0, Miami played from behind the entire game losing to Cal. Jahvid Best of Cal was the MVP with 20 carries for 186 yards and two TDs.
