Miami made the first of three Sugar Bowl appearances in eight years and four overall versus Tennessee in 1986. A win by Miami and a Penn State loss to Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl and the Hurricanes would win the national title. Miami lost 35-7 to Tennessee in the Sugar Bowl which ended their title hopes.

Miami returned to the Sugar Bowl in 1990 with a win and a Colorado loss to Notre Dame in the Orange Bowl virtually assuring the Hurricanes a second national championship. Miami held on for a 33-25 win over Alabama in the Sugar Bowl and Notre Dame upset number one Colorado 21-6 and the Hurricanes won their third title.

Four years after beating Alabama in the Sugar Bowl, Miami entered the 1993 Sugar Bowl as an eight-point favorite over the Crimson Tide. Alabama took a 13-3 lead in the second quarter and never trailed in a 34-13 win. The pivotal play in the game was a 31-yard interception return for a TD by George Teague.

Miami entered the 2001 Sugar Bowl disappointed after just missing a chance to play Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl for a national title. Miami had a good consolation against Florida in the Sugar Bowl. The Hurricanes took the lead for good in the third quarter and outscored Florida 24-3 over the final 22:23 in a 37-20 win.
