Every time Miami football was in the college football playoff rankings
The College Football Playoff began in 2014. The Miami football program did not make its debut in the playoff rankings until 2017. Miami was 10th in the initial 2017 College Football Playoff rankings that were released on October 31. Exactly six years later Miami is one of four 6-2 teams not in the CFP rankings.
The Miami football team was one kneel-down away versus Georgia Tech from an appearance in the initial 2023 playoff rankings. Miami would be 7-1 if had beaten Georgia Tech. The Hurricanes’ collapse against the Yellow Jackets was their first 2023 loss. That was followed up by a loss at North Carolina.
The Miami football team appeared in all six college football playoff rankings in 2017. The Hurricanes were 7-0 when the first CFP rankings were released in 2017. Miami began the 2017 season with wins over Bethune-Cookman, Toledo, Duke, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Syracuse and North Carolina.
After a 28-10 win over number 13 Virginia Tech, Miami remained 10th. A week later, ESPN Gameday made its inaugural appearance in Coral Gables as Miami hosted Notre Dame. After a 41-8 win over number three Notre Dame, Miami vaulted over seven teams into third nationally in the November 14 CFP rankings.
After beating Virginia 42-28, Miami moved past Clemson into second in the November 21 CFP rankings behind only Alabama. After a 24-14 upset loss at Pittsburgh Miami fell to seventh in the November 28 CFP Rankings. Miami was 10th in the final 2017 CFP Rankings after losing 38-3 to Clemson in the ACC title game.
Miami finished the 2017 season with a 34-24 loss to Wisconsin in the Orange Bowl. The CFP doesn’t rank teams after the bowl games and the playoff. Miami finished 13th in the final 2017 Associated Press and USA Today Coaches polls following the Orange Bowl loss to Wisconsin.
With the late start to the 2020 season in several conferences because of Covid, the first College Football Playoff rankings that season were not released until November 24. Miami debuted in the inaugural 2020 Poll 10th with a 7-1 ranking. Clemson was the only team to defeat Miami in its first eight games in 2020.
Miami remained 10th in the December 1 rankings after being sidelined for the second consecutive week because of a Covid breakout. Miami was still 10th in the December 8 rankings after a 48-0 win over Duke. Following its infamous 62-26 loss to North Carolina, Miami plummeted to 18th in the December 15 CFP rankings.
Miami remained 18th in the final 2020 CFP Rankings on December 22 following the conference title games. After a 37-34 loss to Oklahoma State in the Cheez-It Bowl in Orlando, Miami finished 22nd in both final polls of the 2020 season. Miami has not reappeared in the College Football Playoff rankings since 2020.
