Miami football could benefit in transfer portal from Texas AM firing Jimbo Fisher
The firing of Jimbo Fisher by Texas A&M could benefit the Miami football program through the transfer portal. Freshman wide receiver Raymond Cottrell announced his entry transfer portal on Sunday morning. There are nine players on the Texas A&M roster who are from Florida.
Several of the players from Florida on the Texas A&M roster were highly recruited by Miami. Cottrell took one of his four official visits with the Miami football program per his 247 Sports Profile. Cottrell played only 21 snaps this season with a 13-yard touchdown catch versus Louisiana-Monroe as his only reception.
The other Aggies from Florida are running back Amari Daniels and Jerry Johnson, defensive linemen Gabriel Brownlow-Dindy and Shemar Stewart, defensive backs Sam McCall and Sam Rosenberg, linebacker Chantz Johnson and offensive lineman Zachary Clay. Several of those players are worth watching.
Daniels was a highly regarded signee out of Miami Central with Texas A&M in 2021 and is a true junior. In three seasons with the Aggies, Daniels has 143 carries for 803 yards and six touchdowns with 14 receptions for 66 yards. Daniels is having his best season in 2023 with 87 carries for 484 rushing yards and five TDs.
Stewart was one of the most high-profile Miami targets in recent years. In two seasons at Texas A&M, Stewart has 32 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, three sacks, two pass breakups and two fumble recoveries. Stewart had nine visits with Miami, including his official visit in January of 2022.
Stewart has regressed this season. In nine games, Stewart has nine tackles, 2.0 TFLs, 1.5 sacks, one fumble recovery that he returned for a TD on Saturday versus Mississippi State, four QB hurries and two pass breakups. As a potential future first round pick, a change of scenary might help Stewart.
McCall would be transfering for a second time if he chooses to leave Texas A&M. A four-star signee with Florida State in 2022, McCall transfered to Texas A&M during the 2022-23 portal cycle. Miami needs an upgrade at CB. Even if McCall sat out a season, he would significantly upgrade the Miami talent at CB.
Brownlow-Dindy is a redshirt freshman who has recorded one tackle and a 0.5 TFL in four games over two seasons for Texas A&M. Miami offered Brownlow-Dindy in high school, but he chose to take his visits to other programs. Brownlow-Dindy would provide the Miami football program with a needed interior DL for 2024.
The other players listed above from Florida were three-star prospects or less. When a coach leaves his program for whatever reason, players have an immediate 30 day window to enter the transfer portal. Texas A&M players will have an opportunity in the portal that overlaps with the national window that begins December 4.
