As first reported by Matt Shodell of CaneSport, quarterback Emory Williams has a compound arm fracture that he suffered on Saturday versus Florida State. Williams is out for the rest of the season but is expected to be ready when the Miami football team begins spring practice.
Williams suffered the compound arm fracture when running for a first down on the final drive of the game versus Florida State to keep the Miami football team alive. The injury to Williams came on fourth and two. Williams scrambled to his left, stretched out to get the first down and suffered the arm injury.
Williams was 8-23 for 175 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in a gritty performance at Florida State. Williams will conclude his season completing 44 passes in 71 attempts for 470 yards four TDs and one interception. Jacurri Brown and Tyler Van Dyke are the only two healthy scholarship QBs on the Miami roster.
Shodell reported that surgery and rehab will have to go as scheduled for Williams to be able to participate in spring practice. Williams had his arm placed in an air cast on the field and went to the hospital before flying back to Miami with the Hurricanes. Williams is scheduled to have surgery on Monday.
Williams played in his fifth game on Saturday. Players are allowed to compete in four games to maintain a redshirt. With Williams out for the remainder of the season, the expectation is that Van Dyke will start on Saturday versus Louisville. Brown can play in each of the last three Miami games this season and maintain his redshirt.
The injury to Williams creates an intriguing offseason for Miami at QB. Van Dyke is near the end of his fourth year in the Miami football program and will have the option to return to the Hurricanes, enter the NFL Draft, or transfer. Coming off of a redshirt season, Brown could return to Miami or enter the transfer portal.
Miami has a commitment from three-star 2024 QB Judd Anderson. With so much uncertainty projected on the 2024 roster at QB, Miami could add a transfer signal caller. Miami last added a transfer QB when D’Eriq King joined the Hurricanes from Houston. King had a scintillating 2020 season.
