Miami football win over Boston College most complete 2023 game

The 45-20 win by the Miami football team over Boston College on Friday was the most complete performance by the Hurricanes in 2023. The 45 points scored were the second most and 532 yards were the best Miami had versus a 2023 Power Five opponent. Miami also had arguably its best game defensively.

The Miami football team allowed a season-tying low of 20 points and the 294 yards were the second lowest for the Miami defense versus a 2023 Power Five opponent. Miami previously set highs with 48 points scored versus Texas A&M and 486 yards against Louisville versus Power Five opponents.

The lows allowed by the Miami defense were 20 points versus Clemson and North Carolina State and 231 yards against the Tar Heels in games versus Power Five opponents. Boston College accumulated 106 total yards in the fourth quarter. Miami led 35-14 at the end of the third quarter.

Tyler Van Dyke had his second straight productive game after struggling in the middle of the season. Van Dyke was 24-37 for 327 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions in the 38-31 loss to Louisville last week. On Friday, Van Dyke was 23-36 for 290 yards, two TDs and no interceptions.

Miami played complementary football on Saturday. The Miami football team ran 40 times for 242 yards and four TDs. Henry Parrish had his second 100-yard game this season with 11 carries for 110 yards and two TDs. Parrish previously ran 16 times for 139 yards and two TDs in the 48-7 Miami win at Temple in December.

Miami was dominant defensively in the first half after allowing a 10-play, 75-yard Boston College TD drive on the opening possession in 5:05. In the next four Boston College possessions, Miami held the Eagles to 27 yards on 13 plays and three, three and outs. Miami held Boston College to 58 total yards in the second quarter.

Miami played exceptionally well in most specialty situations. The Hurricanes converted six of 12 third down conversions and all three of its fourth down attempts. Miami held Boston College to four of 12 on third down. Boston College converted both of its fourth down attempts on Friday.

Miami was exceptional in the red zone on Friday. The Hurricanes scored on six of seven attempts in the red zone. The only failed red zone attempt was when a 34-yard Andy Borregales field goal attempt was blocked in the fourth quarter. The first five Miami TDs were scored in the red zone.

Boston College converted both of its attempts in the red zone. The third Boston College TD came on a 21-yard run by quarterback Thomas Castellanos just outside the red zone. Castellanos accounted for 281 of the 294 total yards for Boston College on Friday. Lewis Bond was the next-highest Eagle with 46 total yards.

Miami had nine pass plays of 15 or more yards and eight runs of 10 or more yards versus Boston College. Boston College has four completions of 15 or more yards and seven runs of 10 or more yards. The biggest play for Miami was the 30 Ajay Allen TD with 1:07 left. Boston College had a 40-yard Castellanos to Dino Tomlin completion.

Putting together another complete game in its bowl will provide Miami with momentum entering the offseason. Miami will find out which bowl they will play in on December 2. The Hurricanes will enter their bowl with a four-game postseason losing streak. Miami hasn’t played in a bowl since 2020 or won since 2016.
