Smith still holds the Miami single-season record for a TE with 66 receptions in 1984. Smith followed up his 1984 season with 48 receptions for 669 yards and one TD earning consensus All-America honors. Still one of the most productive  TEs in Miami history, Smith had 114 receptions for 1,521 yards and six TDs.

The 66 receptions Smith had in 1984 are still the third most in a single season in Miami history. With 12 receptions versus Maryland in 1984, Smith set the Miami single-game record that stood until 2021 when Mike Harley had 13 versus Duke. Smith set the foundation for Miami to become TE U.

Smith is part of the legacy of Miami players whose sons played for the Hurricanes. Smith’s son Chase has been a linebacker for Miami since 2021. Smith was the first of four Miami TEs to be named All-American. Bubba Franks in 1999, Jeremy Shockey in 2001 and Kellen Winslow II in 2003 were also All-Americans.

Smith is third All-Time in receptions, tied for second in yards and tied for ninth in receiving TDs among TEs in Miami history. Following his Miami career, Smith was selected in the 10th round of the 1986 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns and played three games with the Dolphins in 1987.
