Expect Miami football active in transfer portal to find Tyler Van Dyke replacement
The Miami football program is in flux at quarterback after it was revealed on Monday that three-year starting signal caller Tyler Van Dyke is entering the transfer portal. Jacurri Brown is the only healthy scholarship QB on the Miami roster for next month’s bowl game. Expect Miami to be active in the transfer portal for a QB.
Van Dyke finishes his Miami football career by completing 63.7 percent of his passes for 7,469 yards, 59 touchdowns and 23 interceptions. Van Dyke finishes sixth in Miami football history in passing yards, fourth in passing TDs and the Hurricanes career record in completion percentage.
There has been some speculation that Brown will enter the transfer portal. Without Brown, Miami would not have a scholarship QB available for the bowl game. Emory Williams who started two games this season and 2024 commit Judd Anderson are the other projected QBs on the Miami roster for next season.
D’Eriq King was the last transfer QB Miami added. King had a spectacular 2020 season before suffering an injury that sidelined him early in 2021. Van Dyke replaced King and earned the 2021 ACC Rookie of the Year and Offensive Rookie of the Year with 25 TD passes and six interceptions.
There is an extensive list of quarterbacks for Mario Cristobal and offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson to target in the transfer portal. Chance Linton of 247 Sports wrote about the “2024 college football transfer portal QBs: A running list of signal-callers from the Power Five.”
The two biggest names to watch in the transfer portal at QB for Miami are Will Rogers of Mississippi State and Tyler Slough from Texas Tech. Slough signed with Oregon in the first class under Mario Cristobal after Willie Taggart left for Florida State. Slough was the seventh-best pro-style QB in the 2018 class.
In five collegiate seasons, Slough has completed 63.2 percent of his pass attempts for 4,625 yards, 36 TDs and 17 interceptions with 714 career rushing yards and another 10 TDs. Rogers is second in SEC history with a 69.3 completion percentage, second with 12,315 passing yards and fourth with 94 TD passes.
Before 2023, Rogers played under Mike Leach. Dawson is a disciple of the Air Raid offense that was popularized by Leach over the past 20 years. The familiarity Slough has with Cristobal or the comfortability Rogers has in the Air Raid offense could help Miami sign one of the two as transfers.
