Miami basketball moves up in both national polls and other power rankings

The Miami basketball team received its highest ranking since December 2018 on Monday as the eighth-ranked team in the Associated Press Top 25 and USA Today Coaches’ Polls. Miami has started the 2023-24 season 5-0. The Hurricanes will have their toughest test this season at Kentucky on Tuesday.

Miami began the preseason ranked 13th in the Associated Press poll. The Hurricanes received 1,031 points in the AP Top 25 moving up two spots. Miami moved up three spots in the USA Today Coaches poll with 542 points. The Hurricanes had 920 points in the AP Top 25 last week and 469 points in the USA Today Coaches Poll.

Kentucky is the first-ranked team Miami will play this season. The Wildcats are ranked 12th in both polls. Kentucky received 727 points in the AP Top 25 and 373 in the USA Today Coaches Poll. Miami is the second-highest-ranked ACC team. Duke is ranked seventh in the AP Top 25 and the USA Today Coaches Poll.

Kentucky is 5-1 this season with its sole loss to Kansas who is fifth in the AP Top 25 and sixth in the USA Today Coaches Poll. Longtime college basketball analyst Andy Katz ranks Miami at Kentucky as the fourth-best game nationally this week. Katz has Miami sixth and Kentucky 16th in his weekly Power 36.

North Carolina is the only other team on the 2023-24 Miami basketball schedule that is currently ranked. The Tar Heels are 17th in the AP Top 25 and 16th in the USA Today Coaches poll, Colorado who Miami plays against in Brooklyn next month dropped out of both polls after a loss to Florida State last week.

The ESPN Basketball Power Index projects Miami with a 20.8 percent chance to win at Kentucky. Miami will host Notre Dame on Saturday to begin ACC play. Notre Dame has started the season 3-2. The Fighting Irish have defeated Niagara, Oklahoma State and Maryland-Eastern Shore and lost to Auburn and Western Carolina.
