The Miami football team will gain a new dimension at quarterback with redshirt freshman Jacurri Brown starting in the bowl game next month. Brown is forced to start for the Hurricanes in the bowl game with Tyler Van Dyke announcing on Monday his intention to transfer and Emory Williams being out for the season.

Miami offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson will have to adapt his game plan to Brown’s skills. Van Dyke had 24 carries for 16 yards this season in 11 games with yards lost on sacks included. Williams had seven carries for a loss of 17 yards. Brown was the third leading rusher for Miami in 2022 with 223 yards on 54 carries.

Brown was a four-star signee in the 2022 class who was the 263rd-ranked prospect, 17th QB and 23rd recruit from Georgia. With Van Dyke missing several games and parts of others in 2022, Brown received playing time in eight games. Brown beat out former four-star signee Jake Garcia’s as Miami primary backup QB in 2022.

Brown redshirted during the regular season in part to work on his accuracy. In 2022 Brown completed 27 passes in 45 attempts for 230 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions. David Lake of Inside the U highlighted the metrics for Brown as a passer and runner during the 2022 season.

"“According to Pro Football Focus, in his limited action in 2022, Brown completed 12-of-15 passes that traveled behind the line of scrimmage. He completed 9-of-15 passes on short passes (zero to nine yards past the line of scrimmage) and completed 6-of-8 medium passes (ten to 19 yards past the line of scrimmage.Brown didn’t complete any deep shots on five attempts. As a runner, Brown averaged 3.35 yards per carry after contact and forced 17 missed tackles on 40 attempts. He gained 284 yards as a runner with 209 of those yards coming on designed quarterback runs. Brown converted 16 first downs as a runner.”"

The best game for Brown in 2022 was versus Georgia Tech. Brown had 19 carries for 87 yards and was 14 of 19 for 136 yards passing, three touchdowns and no interceptions in a 35-14 Miami win at Georgia Tech. That was the same game safety Kamren Kinchens had three interceptions, including one returned for a TD.

The bowl opponent will dictate how the Miami football team will use Brown. Expect Mario Cristobal and Dawson to lean on the running game early. Miami is 47th nationally averaging 176.75 rushing yards per game and 16th producing 5.2 yards per game. Brown has a huge opportunity in the bowl game.
