Miami football 2023 Defensive transfers key contributors
The Miami football program added 10 transfers on defense who appeared during the 2023 season. Middle linebacker Francisco Mauigoa who was named second-team All-ACC on Tuesday is the only transfer on the Miami defense that earned All-Conference. Several other transfers were key contributors.
Mauigoa will likely end the 2023 season leading the Miami football team in tackles, tackles for loss and potentially sacks. Mauigoa is currently second on Miami with 70 tackles, leads the Hurricanes with 17.0 TFLs and is tied with freshman Rueben Bain with 7.5 sacks. James Williams currently leads Miami with 73 tackles.
Williams is entering the NFL Draft and will not play in Miami’s bowl game. Mauigoa transferred to Miami from Washington State and has one year of eligibility remaining in 2024. Mauigoa will provide stability for Miami at LB entering next season. Corey Flagg announced his intention to enter the transfer portal earlier this week.
Miami signed defensive linemen Jamil Burroughs, Anthony Campbell, Branson Deen and Thomas Gore as transfers in 2023. Burroughs has not played in 2023. Campbell has in one game without recording any stats. Deen has been a key contributor this season and Gore helped provide depth.
Deen has 16 tackles, 5.5 TFLs, 2.5 sacks and two quarterback hits this season. Gore has seven tackles four TFLs, two sacks and two forced fumbles. Deen was a regular part of the Miami rotation for most of the season. All of the DL transfers Miami added in 2023 except Deen have eligibility remaining for at least 2024.
In addition to Mauigoa, Miami added K.J. Cloyd from Louisville and Rocky Shelton from Duke as LBs to its 2023 roster. Cloyd is the fifth on Miami with 42 tackles and has contributed 6.5 TFLs, two sacks and one pass defended. Shelton provided depth while primarily contributing to special teams.
Miami added Davonte Brown, Jaden Davis and Jadais Richard as cornerbacks to the 2023 roster. In nine games this season Brown has nine tackles and one pass defended. Davis has 36 tackles, three TFLs, one sack, two forced fumbles and four passes defended. Richard has 13 tackles in 2023.
Davis and Shelton do not have eligibility beyond 2023. Everyone else in the back seven can return for Miami. Richard came on at the end of the season. Richard tied his season high with four tackles versus Louisville. Expect Miami to be most active in recruiting defensive tackles and safeties on defense in the 2023 transfer portal.
