Miami basketball plummets in week 5 rankings

The Miami basketball team fell seven spots in the Associated Press Top 25 and USA Today Coaches Polls. Miami is ranked 15th in the week four polls after being ranked eighth last week. The 93-72 Miami loss at Kentucky on Tuesday night doomed the Hurricanes. Miami beat Notre Dame 62-39 on Saturday.

The Miami basketball team stayed in front of Kentucky after the Wildcats were upset at home by UNC-Wilmington on Saturday. Kentucky fell to 16th in the AP Top 25 and 17th in the USA Today Coaches poll. Miami remains the second-highest-ranked team in the ACC. North Carolina is currently the top-ranked ACC team.

The Tar Heels moved up eight spots in the ACC Top 25 and six in the USA Today Coaches Poll. North Carolina vaulted several teams after beating tenth-ranked Tennessee in the inaugural ACC-SEC Challenge and Florida State to open conference play. Duke plummeted after losing twice last week.

The Blue Devils lost at Arkansas in their challenge game and at Georgia Tech in their ACC opener on Saturday. Duke fell 14 spots in the AP Top 25 and 15 in the USA Today Coaches Poll. Miami was passed by North Carolina in the week four polls and Duke dropped below the Hurricanes on Monday.

Miami received 638 points in the AP Top 25. The Hurricanes had 1,031 points as the eighth-ranked team in the week four rankings. Miami had 263 points in the week five USA Today Coaches poll. Miami had 542 points in the week four USA Today Coaches Poll. Miami will next play a ranked team when they host Clemson on January 3.

The Tigers are 25th in the AP Top 25 this week. Miami has a big test on Sunday versus Colorado at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Colorado is 40th in the Associated Press poll this week and 32nd in the USA Today Coaches Poll. The Buffaloes are 7-2 this season. Colorado lost to Colorado State and Florida State.

The Buffaloes beat Pepperdine on Sunday. Colorado is off until they play Miami. The Hurricanes host LIU on Wednesday. Miami hosts LaSalle, Stonehill and North Florida after playing Colorado before beginning ACC play versus Clemson. Miami is 63rd in the initial NCAA Net Ratings that help determine NCAA Tournament seeds.
