The Miami football program has depth on the current roster and with wide receivers committed in the 2024 class to absorb the entry of Colbie Young into the transfer portal. Manny Navarro of The Athletic and Pete Thamel of ESPN were the first to simultaneously report that Young would enter the transfer portal.
Young was third on the Miami football team with 47 receptions and 563 receiving yards in 2022. Xavier Restrepo and Young tied for second on Miami with five touchdowns. Miami will be able to provide receivers further down the depth chart a chance to receive more significant playing time versus Rutgers in the Pinstripe Bowl.
Expect Miami to work Breshard Smith in with starters Jacolby George and Restrepo versus Rutgers. Restrepo and Smith are both slots, but to get the three best receivers on the field they will likely start with George. Young is the second Miami WR to enter the transfer portal this month after Frank Ladson.
Miami veterans Tyler Harrell, Isaiah Horton and Michael Redding III, junior college transfer Shermar Kirk and true freshmen Ray Ray Joseph and Robby Washington should receive significantly more playing time in the Pinstripe Bowl. Harrell is in his last year of eligibility.
Looking to the future, the Miami football program has commitments from four-star prospects Ny Carr, Chance Robinson and Joshisa Trader for 2024. Miami could look to the transfer portal to add another veteran WR to the 2024 roster. Decisions by Restrepo and Smith will also impact what Miami does at WR in 2024.
Mario Cristobal, offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson and WR coach Kevin Beard are working hard to slip five-star Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna Prep WR Jeremiah Smith. Smith is committed to Ohio State and a high school teammate of Trader. Smith’s decision will also impact how Miami replaces Young.
Young is in his second season with Miami after transferring from Lackawanna Junior College in Pennsylvania. In two seasons with Miami Young has 79 receptions for 930 yards and 10 TDs. Young was a consistent player who never had a breakout game in 2023. Young had a season-high six receptions for 76 yards versus Clemson.
