Miami basketball almost falls out of rankings

Following its 90-63 loss to Colorado at the NABC Showcase at the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn on Sunday the Miami basketball team fell to 24th in the AP Top 25 and the USA Today Coaches Polls. Miami was ranked 15th in both polls last week. The Hurricanes fell 18 spots to 54th in NCAA Net Ratings after the loss to Colorado.

Miami is the fourth-highest-ranked team in the ACC. North Carolina is the top-ranked ACC team. The Tar Heels are ninth in the AP Top 25 and the USA Today Coaches Polls. Clemson is 13th in the AP Top and 11th in the USA Today Coaches Poll. Duke is 21st in the AP Top 25 and 19th in the USA Today Coaches Poll.

Miami received 156 points in the AP Top 25 and 92 points in the USA Today Coaches Poll. Last week Miami received 638 points in the AP Top 25 and 263 in the USA Today Coaches Poll. Miami has fallen 16 spots from the polls posted two weeks ago and will not have a significant chance to move up in the polls for three weeks.

Miami hosts LaSalle, Stonehill and North Florida in the next three games. The Hurricanes begin ACC Play on January 3 versus Clemson. Clemson gave TCU its first loss of the season on Saturday in Toronto. The Tigers moved up 11 spots in the AP Top 25 and nine in the USA Today Coaches Polls this week.

The Miami basketball team has few opportunities against teams currently ranked in the remainder of this season. Clemson, Duke, North Carolina and Virginia are the only other ranked teams in the ACC. No other ACC teams received votes this week. Clemson is the highest-ranked ACC team in the Net Ratings at 13th.

ACC teams in the Net Ratings currently ahead of Miami are number 20 Virginia, Duke who is 33rd, North Carolina at 36th, Pittsburgh at 42nd and North Carolina State who is one spot ahead of Miami at 53rd. Winning the games against the teams in front of them in the net ratings will be critical for Miami’s NCAA Tournament seed.
