The entry of Tyler Van Dyke into the transfer portal means that the Miami football program is likely looking for a starting quarterback for the 2024 season. Five transfer signal callers stand out and seem likely for Miami to pursue. Expect Miami to pursue an experienced QB over one who has spent only a year or two in college.

The Miami football program has not signed a transfer quarterback since D’Eriq King before the 2020 season. King had a historical season for Miami in 2020 completing 64.1 percent of his passes for 2,686 yards, 23 touchdowns, five interceptions and rushing for 538 yards and another four scores.

After King suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in 2021, Van Dyke took over as the starter. During a record-setting season, Van Dyke earned the 2021 ACC Rookie of the Year and Offensive Rookie of the Year. In the last two seasons, Van Dyke has been inconsistent and battled injuries.

The decision by Van Dyke to transfer should benefit him and the Miami football program. Both sides need a fresh start. Redshirt freshman Jacurri Brown will start for Miami in the Pinstripe Bowl versus Rutgers on December 28. True freshman, Emory Williams suffered a season-ending broken arm versus Florida State in November.

Miami does not have a healthy scholarship QB on its roster behind Brown for the Pinstripe Bowl. If Brown is injured versus Rutgers, Miami would have to play a walk-on QB. Brown will be taking his first snaps of the season in the Pinstripe Bowl. There is potential for Brown to transfer during the 2024 offseason.
