4-star Miami QB commit Israel Abrams is already changing the Canes' future plans

Mario Cristobal has leaned on the transfer portal at quarterback for three straight years now, from Cam Ward to Carson Beck to this year's addition, Darian Mensah. At ACC Kickoff, he made clear he doesn't expect to keep doing it much longer.

He said Miami's quarterback room and the young talent behind it has finally caught up to the point where the Hurricanes can develop their own instead of shopping for one every offseason. A big part of that confidence is sitting one year away from campus.

Israel Abrams enters his senior season at Montini Catholic as the No. 2 quarterback in the country per MaxPreps' preseason rankings, behind only Alabama commit Elijah Haven.

The two have already squared off once this year at the Elite 11 Finals in Los Angeles. Abrams is now regarded as a five-star prospect and the No. 3 quarterback in the class per Rivals, a jump from the four-star rating he carried when he committed to Miami back in April.

If that standing holds through signing day, he'd be Miami's highest-rated quarterback signee since Kyle Wright back in 2003.

Abrams completed 233 of 340 passes for 4,072 yards and 40 touchdowns as a junior, adding 224 yards and 10 more scores on the ground, while leading Montini Catholic to a 14-0 record and the Class 4A state title. In the championship game against Rochester, he threw for 425 yards and four touchdowns.

He hasn't lost a game he's started since taking over the job in Week 5 of his sophomore year, a stretch that includes a Class 3A title that season too. His career record as a starter sits at 24-0.

Beyond Dereon Coleman (signed from the 2026 class) and Abrams, Miami also holds commitments from three-star 2028 quarterback Knox Annis and 2029 quarterback CJ Cypher.
