Miami catcher Alonzo Alvarez has added another national honor to a freshman season that put him on the map.

Baseball America named Alvarez a Freshman All-American after the switch-hitting catcher finished his first season as one of Miami's most productive hitters and seized a larger role behind the plate. The recognition follows his First Team Freshman All-America selection from Perfect Game and ACC All-Freshman Team honor.

Alvarez started 45 of Miami's 51 games and batted .341 with a .439 on-base percentage, .551 slugging percentage and .990 OPS. The freshman recorded 57 hits, 13 doubles, two triples, six home runs, 32 RBI and 40 runs scored, production that made him one of the most reliable bats in a Miami lineup that won 39 games and reached the NCAA Gainesville Regional championship game.

He batted .583 over the Hurricanes' final six games, going 14-for-24 with two doubles, two home runs, six RBI and seven runs scored. Alvarez reached base at a .630 clip during that stretch and posted a .917 slugging percentage, producing multiple hits in four of the six games.

His defining performance came in the ACC Baseball Championship opener against Stanford. Alvarez went 4-for-5 with two doubles, two home runs, three RBI and three runs scored as Miami beat the Cardinal 11-2. The 12-total-base day was the best of his young career and came when the Hurricanes needed a jolt after a difficult close to the regular season.

Miami will enter the offseason with questions after falling short of a Super Regional, but Alvarez gives the program an established answer at one of its most difficult positions to fill.

The 6-foot-3 catcher arrived from Heritage High School in Brentwood, California, as a highly regarded switch hitter. Alvarez now enters 2027 as a player Miami can expect to anchor the lineup.
