The Athletics selected Miami catcher Alex Sosa with the No. 172 overall pick in the sixth round of the 2026 MLB Draft on Sunday, making him the second Hurricane taken on Day 2 after Washington selected third baseman Daniel Cuvet in the fifth round.
Sosa transferred to Miami after two seasons at NC State and provided J.D. Arteaga's lineup with a left-handed power bat and a veteran presence behind the plate.

Athletics land Miami catcher Alex Sosa
He started all 59 games and hit .338 with a 1.119 OPS, 18 home runs, 71 RBIs, 75 hits, 16 doubles, two triples, 63 runs and 41 walks. His power carried extra weight for the Hurricanes after Daniel Cuvet missed time, and Sosa finished as Miami’s team leader in home runs. He also finished with a .448 on-base percentage and a .671 slugging percentage, turning a strong sophomore season at NC State into a legitimate draft resume at Miami.
Sosa had already shown offensive ability with the Wolfpack, hitting .291 with 16 doubles, 10 home runs, 40 RBIs, a .401 on-base percentage and a .534 slugging percentage in 2025, but Miami gave him a bigger stage and a chance to show he could handle a larger role as a catcher in the ACC.
Three years later, that route paid off. Sosa has played 146 career college games, batting .298 with 34 home runs, 135 RBIs, 156 hits, 122 runs, 33 doubles and 95 walks. His final season at Miami was easily the best of his career and pushed him into the sixth round.
