Bill Belichick signed 40 freshmen in his second recruiting class at North Carolina, the second-largest haul in the country and a group ranked No. 17 nationally. On Saturday night at Kenan Stadium, several of those true freshmen will start or play significant snaps against the nation's No. 1 team.
The Tar Heels (4-3, 2-2 ACC) host Miami (7-0, 5-0) in a prime-time ACC matchup. For a program still building after a 4-8 debut season under Belichick, the game is both a measuring stick for the present and a look at how heavily the staff is relying on high-school talent.
Belichick has described the class as the foundation of the program. After a first offseason shortened by his December 2024 arrival, he had a full recruiting cycle in 2025 to assemble the group and enroll more than 30 true freshmen in time for spring practice.
Offensive line and the rise of Cristian Alvarez
One of the best true freshmen on UNC is guard Cristian Alvarez. The 6-foot-4, 300-pound freshman from St. Joseph Regional in New Jersey entered the starting lineup after injuries forced a reshuffle. He has started four consecutive games against Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, Duke and Syracuse and has logged roughly 296 offensive snaps through the Syracuse game.
Alvarez has not allowed a sack in his limited sample, but his matchup against Miami's front (featuring Marquise Lightfoot, Damon Wilson II, Justin Scott and Ahmad Moten Sr.) the assignment will be the most demanding of his young career.
WR room competition: Sadler and Helton
At wide receiver, two freshmen are competing for bigger roles. C.J. Sadler, the 5-foot-9 prospect from Cass Tech in Detroit, has started four games and played 172 offensive snaps while catching eight passes for 114 yards.
He did not play an offensive snap against Syracuse on Oct. 24 and Belichick said other players simply performed better in practice that week.
Nyqir "Boomer" Helton played 10 snaps against East Tennessee State, 20 at Duke and then 67 against Syracuse, nearly matching veteran starter Jordan Shipp's 68. In that game, Helton caught his first two college passes for 15 yards and was targeted six times.
Kenton Dopson and Miami
Cornerback Kenton Dopson III was a four-star recruit from Miami Norland who had been committed to the Hurricanes back in March 2025 as a member of the 2027 class. He then reclassified to 2026 and flipped to North Carolina in October 2025.
The chance to play immediately at a position of need and to be coached by Belichick were the reasons for the move.
Against Duke, Dopson played 65 defensive snaps, recorded seven tackles and intercepted Walker Eget with 14 seconds remaining to preserve UNC's 24-20 victory. He has 17 tackles and that one interception on the season, but his snap count dropped to 18 against Syracuse.
Covering Malachi Toney or other Miami receivers will easily be the highest-profile assignment of his career so far.
