BYU has dominant second half to bury Miami at ESPN Events International

BYU buried Miami in the second half after the Hurricanes had a four-point halftime lead in their semifinal of the ESPN Events International in Orlando.

BYU outscored Miami 43-29 in the second half to defeat the Hurricanes 72-62 on Thursday in the ESPN Events International semifinal in Orlando. Miami will play either Dayton or Georgetown in the consolation game on Friday.

BYU Cougars vs Miami Hurricanes

BYU was led by RK Davis with 18 points, Rob Wright had 17 and projected 2026 NBA lottery pick A.J. Dybansta had 16. After Miami held BYU to 39.4 percent from the field and three of nine on three-point shots, the Cougars shot 54.5 percent in the second half and made six of 10 from beyond the arc.

Malik Reneau led Miami with 14, true freshman Shelton Henderson finished with 13 and Tre Donaldson had 12. Miami shot 17.9 percent from the field but made only five of 22 three-point attempts and seven ot 17 from the free throw line. BYU made nine of its 19 three-point shots and six of 13 of 20 from the free throw line.

Miami had a 7-0 run late in the first half to take a six-point lead. BYU scored at the halftime buzzer to cut the deficit to 33-29 at halftime. The Cougars had a 10-0 run in the middle of the second half to surge in front 49-40 and were never seriously threatened by Miami for the rest of the game.

The closest Miami got was 67-60 with 1:11 remaining in the game. Miami center Ernest Udeh Jr. was called for an intentional foul, BYU made one of two free throws and did not score on the ensuing possession, but the Cougars were able to ice the game.

Miami dropped to 5-2 with the loss. The Hurricanes have lost both of their games against ranked opponents this season. Florida defeated Miami 82-66 in Jacksonville on November 16. Miami is at Mississippi in the ACC-SEC Challenge on Tuesday after the game against Dayton or Georgetown on Friday.
