Cam Ward never had the chance to throw a pass to Malachi Toney at Miami, but after watching the Hurricanes receiver's freshman season, the former Miami quarterback made clear he wishes the timing had been different.

Ward said in a recent social-media clip that he would have liked to play with Toney, praising the rising sophomore's natural ability as a receiver.

"What he got, you can't teach that," Ward said. "Natural hands, natural route runner."

Cam Ward's praise for Malachi Toney explains why Miami's young star is different

Ward spent one season with the Hurricanes in 2024, set single-season program records with 4,313 passing yards, 39 touchdown passes and 305 completions, then became the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Toney arrived one season later and quickly created his own place in Miami's record book.

The South Florida native led the nation with 109 receptions as a true freshman in 2025, setting Miami's single-season record. He also set the program record with 1,211 receiving yards, caught 10 touchdown passes and finished with 1,622 all-purpose yards.

Toney opened his career with six catches for 82 yards and a touchdown against Notre Dame. He had five 100-yard receiving games, including a 12-catch, 146-yard performance at Virginia Tech and a 13-catch, 126-yard game against Pittsburgh. And he also delivered one of Miami's most iconic moments in the postseason.

Toney scored Miami's only touchdown in the College Football Playoff opener against Texas A&M, which came after he fumbled earlier in the game. It was a moment that showed how much he cared — because he was clearly upset on the sideline — as well as his maturity. After the mistake, he quickly gathered himself and played well down the stretch.

Later in the CFP he caught a touchdown in the Fiesta Bowl semifinal against Ole Miss and then had 10 catches for 122 yards and a score in the national championship game against Indiana.
