In the 28-23 loss at Georgia Tech two weeks ago, Cam Ward quietly set the Miami single-season record for total yards. Ward is poised to set the Miami single-season passing yardage record and can set the all-division career record for touchdown passes versus Wake Forest on Saturday.
Ward had 348 passing yards and negative five rushing yards versus Georgia Tech and now has 3,686 total yards in 2024 passing Malik Rosier who had 3,588 total yards in 2017 for the Miami single-season record. Ward averages 367.6 total yards per game in 2024 and should become the first Miami player with over 4,000 total yards in a season on Saturday.
Ward enters the game versus Wake Forest third in Miami history on Saturday with 3,494 passing yards in 2024. Brad Kaaya is second in Miami history with 3,532 passing yards in 2016. Bernie Kosar holds the Miami single-season passing yardage record with 3,642 set in 1984.
Ward should pass Kosar in the first half and reach 4,000 total yards for the second sometime in the second half. At Syracuse in the regular season finale on November 30, Ward is on pace to become the first Miami passer to go over 4,000 yards in a single season.
Per J.C. Shelton of Athlon Sports Ward has 151 career passing TDs combined at FCS Incarnate Word, Washington State and Miami. Case Keenum of Houston holds the career record with 155 career passing TDs from 2007 through 2011. Ward has an excellent chance to tie the career TD record versus Wake Forest.
Ward already set the single season Miami record with 32 touchdown passes. Steve Walsh previously held the record with 29. If Miami reaches the ACC Championship game, Ward should have an opportunity to become the first Hurricanes' quarterback with 40 TD passes in a single season.
Ward is trending towards being in New York for the Heisman Trophy Ceremony in three weeks. Vinny Testaverde in 1986 and Gino Torretta in 1992 are the only Miami Heisman Trophy winners. Ken Dorsey is the only other Miami QB who was a Heisman Trophy finalist. Ward is having the greatest season ever by a Miami QB.
