Cam Ward wins Ward Wins Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award
Cam Ward became the third Miami Hurricane to win the Davey O'Brien Award as the best quarterback nationally in 2024. Ward joined Vinny Testaverde in 1986 and Gino Torretta in 1992. Testaverde and Torretta also won the Heisman Trophies in those same seasons.
Ward led the nation with 36 touchdown passes, an 88 QB rating, and he was second with 4,123 passing yards, points responsible with 254 and 359.9 yards of total offense per game. Ward set Miami single-season records for passing touchdowns, passing yards and total offense.
The generational season by Ward culminated in Ward becoming the first Miami ACC Offensive Player of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year. Led by Ward Miami was first nationally averaging 44.2 points per game, 538.3 YPG, 7,6 yards per play, 327 first downs and a 56.5 third down conversion rate.
Ward beat out Shaddeur Sanders of Colorado and Dillon Gabriel of Oregon to win the O'Brien Award. Gabriel and Ward will be in New York on Saturday night with Colorado defensive back/wide receiver Travis Hunter and Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty as the 2024 Heisman Trophy Finalists.
Ward is the first Miami player to throw for over 4,000 yards, have over 4.000 yards of total offense, top 30 TD passes and be responsible for 40 TDs in a season. Pro Football Focus named Ward a first-team All-American and he will likely receive the same honor from other major media outlets as they name their teams.
Ken Dorsey who was Heisman Trophy finalist in 2001 and 2002 was the last Miami first-team All-American QB in 2002. Ward is projected to be the first first-round Miami QB in the main NFL Draft since Testaverde in 1987. Bernie Kosar in 1985 and Steve Walsh in 1989 were first-round NFL supplemental picks.
