Everyone now knows what Carson Beck is getting paid this season, so you can all chill out,

According to Pete Nakos from On3/Rivals, the Miami quarterback signed a deal that will get him between $3-3.2 million this year. The number is a little lower than what ws thrown out much earlier, but he's still among the highest-paid QBs in college football this year. Good for him.

The numbers don't lie, but people do

Maybe the real problem with NIL is when random people throw out bogus numbers about what one player is making. I've always felt a little uncomfortable discussing business deals that shouldn't be disclosed. As my father used to tell me, "put your hand in someone else's pocket, and it might get cut off".

The most popular number that was thrown out on Beck's payment was $4 million and everyone ran with it without doing a lick of research. It was the height of college football media irresponsibility, a desire to be first without thinking about being right.

Now the real number wasn't too far off, but that's not the point. The point is, the right information will eventually come out.

The market determines the value

When Beck entered the portal, it was going to take a large amount to sign him and the only fit was going to be with a team that was hungry to reach the playoffs and hungry to compete for a conference championship. That's Miami.

And Beck is an experienced quarterback with two years as a starter under his belt. He's won a lot of games in his career and played in some of the most challenging road environments. If Beck has a good year, which I believe he will, he's at least a top-100 pick in the upcoming NFL Draft and probably much higher.

This was worth the investment. Especially when you consider he's making roughly the same amount as Bryce Underwood, who has NEVER taken a snap in college football. I'm not saying Underwood won't be a dude, but he might also be a bust. Duke is paying way more for a guy that didn't even win the American Conference!

And if it works out for Duke, that's good for them. If it doesn't, Mensah still has life-changing money. There's nothing wrong with taking advantage of the market and there's nothing wrong with Miami, Duke or Michigan putting their money where their mouth is.

If the haters don't like that, too bad. Your favorite program should do better.Â
