Carson Beck sending Jacoby Brissett to the bench? Let's hold the phone there

In terms of a preseason NFL debut, could things have gone much better for former Miami Hurricanes quarterback Carson Beck at the Hall of Fame Game? Probably not. Leading up to kickoff, countless people were ready to remind Miami and Arizona fans that Beck's last attempted pass in a game was picked off, leading to the Canes losing the national title game in a heartbreaker.

Well, Beck was brilliant against the Carolina Panthers in primetime, throwing for 148 yards and a touchdown in the first half alone (Beck finished 15-of-19 for 188 yards). Because of this, it has quite a large number of people posting all over social media that he should start for the Cardinals once the regular season opener gets here over veteran signal-caller Jacoby Brissett. Seriously? No knock on Beck, but there are a lot of things we've got to keep in mind before making that kind of a jump.

Yes, it's easy to point out that Beck looked confident throwing the ball, and that he was slicing up the Carolina defense. But come on, we've got to be realistic here too. The Panthers were running with backups, and Beck essentially had all day to scan the field and throw. He went basically untouched all night, which is much different than a regular season contest.

This game was played in Canton to officially start the football season, and as much fun as it is each summer, it's meaningless. You think Dave Canales would let Beck have enough time to make dinner before finding an open receiver if this was Week 2 or Week 3 in September? Not a chance.

Still, though, we can't knock on Beck, as he took advantage of his opportunities, and he no question shut up plenty of his haters too. Again, the last time we saw Beck play in a competitive game, his game-ending interception against Indiana and Curt Cignetti was downright heartbreaking. The 'same old Carson' line kept getting delivered, with Georgia supporters loving every minute of it.

That wasn't fair to Beck then and it's not fair to him now. No one should put that natty loss on him. He helped Miami post a memorable season, and one loss to the Hoosiers doesn't change that. As for his move to the NFL, he's now with Arizona looking to make a name for himself, and he absolutely took a step in the right direction against the Panthers.

However, are we going to forget that Arizona gave Brissett, who is entering his 11th season in the league, a one-year, $15.5 million deal for the 2026 campaign? Nope. Arizona got things done to avoid a camp holdout, signaling that first-year head coach Mike LaFleur wants him to lead the offense out onto the field once Week 1 gets here. Beck should be holding a clipboard for that dance with the Chargers, but if Brissett struggles, then absolutely, let's see what Beck can do with the ball in his hands come October or November. But for Sept. 13? Not quite.
