CBS Sports gave Miami's quarterback room national respect by putting it at No. 8 in its QB room rankings, but the Hurricanes should be higher.

CBS Sports said it evaluated which rooms have "real players, real answers and enough talent behind the headliner" to survive a difficult season. Miami has that kind of room, starting with Darian Mensah, and there is a strong case that the Hurricanes belong at No. 5 instead of behind Utah, LSU and USC.

CBS Sports puts Miami’s QB room at No. 8

Miami has become dependent on transfer quarterbacks under Mario Cristobal. Mensah is the third veteran quarterback Cristobal has brought in, and that reality is why CBS Sports labeled Miami "QB Portal University." While that is accurate, it should not be used to minimize how well Miami has handled the most important position in the sport.

CBS Sports mentioned Luke Nickel and Dereon Coleman. Nickel took six snaps as a true freshman and is now a redshirt freshman in the program. Coleman arrived this spring as a freshman. Judd Anderson is entering his third season in the program, while Joe Borchers and Vinny Gonzalez add further depth to the room. Miami's roster has seven scholarship quarterbacks.

While the backup group remains unproven, there is a ton of talent there. And when you look at the recent transfer portal QB success, Mensah's success at Duke, and the rankings from the young QBs, Miami has a case to be higher that can't be ignored.

CBS Sports' quarterback-room ranking:

  • No. 1 Oregon: Dante Moore and Dylan Raiola
  • No. 2 Texas: Arch Manning, MJ Morris, Dia Bell and KJ Lacey
  • No. 3 Utah: Devon Dampier and Byrd Ficklin
  • No. 4 Ole Miss: Trinidad Chambliss and Deuce Knight
  • No. 5 Ohio State: Julian Sayin and Tavien St. Clair
  • No. 6 LSU: Sam Leavitt and Husan Longstreet
  • No. 7 USC: Jordan Maiava, Sam Huard and Jonas Williams
  • No. 8 Miami: Darian Mensah, Luke Nickel and Dereon Coleman
  • No. 9 Houston: Connor Weigman and Keisean Henderson
  • No. 10 Notre Dame: CJ Carr, Blake Hebert and Noah Grubbs
