Well, if Miami's offense needed another kick in the rear, CFP committee chair Mack Rhoades offered a foot.

Rhoades took on the question of the Hurricanes' No. 15 CFP ranking directly by basically saying the offense has not been playoff worthy and needs to get better. The explanation goes deeper when Miami's ranking is compared to Notre Dame's. The Irish are ranked ninth this week, six spots ahead of the Hurricanes, despite Miami having the head-to-head win.

Rhoades sends direct shot at Miami

The committee chair didn't mince words here. He simply said Miami hasn't been consistent enough and, therefore, they haven't been playoff worthy. The Hurricanes' worthiness can be discussed, but the consistency questions have been something that has plagued Miami for over a month.

"The conversation with Miami has been about their consistency — their consistency, especially on offense," Rhoades said. "They've been really, really good on defense. Obviously, the head-to-head with Notre Dame comes up, so a lot of conversation about Notre Dame. (They've) won seven straight, better defensively than what they were at the beginning of the year. All of those things played into it. "

This goes into the belief that Notre Dame is simply winning the eye test. The Irish have won their games by an average of 26.1 points and all by double digits. Miami has lost two of four.

"We've got great respect for Miami. When you think of the eye test, they're really talented on both sides of the ball. Just need to be a little bit more consistent on the offense."

Booger comes to bat for the 'Canes

ESPN analyst Booger McFarland believes that the head-to-head between Miami and Notre Dame will continue to come into play as long as the Hurricanes win the games in front of them.

"I know that people look at Miami and the two losses, but I love the fact that they're creeping up," McFarland said. "And I know they're below Notre Dame, but at some point if they both wind up with 10-2 records, I think the committee at that point will have to look hard at the head to head. It's good to see them creep up a bit this week."
