Daniel Cuvet slugs Miami to big win over ACC 1st place North Carolina State

Daniel Cuvet drove in five runs Jake Ogden stole home as Miami beat ACC first-place North Carolina State on Friday night.

Daniel Cuvet drove in five runs with two home runs and a sacrifice fly, Jake Odgen stole home and Miami earned a key 6-4 win over ACC first-place North Carolina State on Friday night in Coral Gables. Cuvet helped Miami set the tone early with HRs in the first and third innings as Miami took a 4-1 lead.

North Carolina State rallied with a three-run fourth inning to tie the game at four. A single by Luke Nixon drove in a run for NC State to make the score 4-2. The Wolfpack then scored on a ground out and a second run came home on the play when a throw by Ogden got by Cuvet at third base to tie the game at four.

Miami took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth inning on a series of wild sequences. Ogden left off the fifth with a double. Max Galvin struck out but reached first on a dropped third strike and Ogden advanced to third. Cuvet and Dorian Gonzalez then struck out to get NC State on the verge of getting out of the inning.

Tanner Smith then walked. With two strikes on Evan Taveras, Ogden stole home to give Miami a 5-4 lead and Galvin was thrown out at third base to end the inning. Miami added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh inning with a Cuvet sacrifice fly to close the scoring and give Miami the win

NC State had a chance to tie the game in the top of the sixth. Alex Sosa doubled on the first pitch of the inning. After a strikeout, Nixon doubled, but Sosa eventually got caught between third base and home and was tagged out at third. Alex Giroux, who relieved Griffin Hugus, got the final out of the inning to keep Miami up one.

Hugus pitched 5.1 innings to earn the win. Bryan Walters pitched the ninth inning allowing a double and getting a strikeout for his ninth save. Miami's win was its ninth straight in the ACC. Miami will go for the series win on Saturday night with the first pitch at 6 PM Eastern Standard Time.
