Darryl Porter Jr. top 5 Pro Football Focus week six cornerback nationally

Darryl Porter Jr. was one of the top five Pro Football Focus graded cornerbacks this week for his performance versus California on Saturday.

Darryl Porter Jr. finished with the fifth-highest Pro Football Focus grade in week six for his performance versus California. Porter finished with two tackles and a pass breakup versus California. Porter was named one of the two CBs on the Pro Football Focus week six All-ACC team.

Porter was the highest-rated ACC CB by Pro Football Focus for week six. Ceyair Wright of Nebraska, Trey Amos of Mississippi and Theran Johnson of Northwestern were the only CBs ranked ahead of Porter Jr. for week six. Per David Lake of Inside the U, Porter Jr. did not allow a reception on four targets or miss a tackle on Saturday.

Porter Jr. was a lockdown CB for Miami on a night the Hurricanes allowed 297 passing yards. Miami completely shut down the California passing game in the fourth quarter. California did not complete a pass in six attempts, with one interception thrown during the final 15 minutes of play versus Miami.

Porter has nine tackles and two pass breakups this season. In three seasons with Miami Porter has played in 24 games with 16 starts. Porter has 43 tackles, two tackles for loss and seven pass breakups for Miami. Porter has not had more than two tackles or a pass breakup in any game this season.

Porter originally signed with West Virginia in the 2020 class as a three-star prospect, the 1,189th player, 102nd CB and 156 recruit in Florida out of American Heritage. The most productive season for Porter was in 2021 as a sophomore at West Virginia with 40 tackles, 1.0 TFL, 1.0 interception and six pass breakups in 2021.

After two seasons with West Virginia, Porter Jr. transferred to Miami in 2022. Porter Jr. and Washington transfer Mishael Powell have led a young Miami secondary in 2024. Miami has struggled in pass defense during the last two games, but the fourth-quarter performance versus California was critical in the comeback.
