Deon Bush carries Miami's torch in Super Bowl LIX as Canes' lone representative

Miami alum Deon Bush is is the sole Hurricanes' alum playing in Super Bowl LIX

Nine-year NFL veteran and Miami Hurricanes football alum Deon Bush is preparing for his third consecutive Super Bowl with the Kansas City Chiefs. After spending his first three seasons with the Chicago Bears, Bush joined Kansas City in time for their three-year Super Bowl run in 2022.

Bush played in 16 games and had 11 tackles during his first season with Kansas City in 2022. In the last two seasons, Bush has played in eight games with 10 tackles and one fumble recovery. Bush only played in two regular season games in 2024 with four tackles.

Throughout his NFL career, Bush was on the roster of the Bears for playoff games in 2018 and 2020 and in the last three seasons with the Chiefs. In nine career playoff games, The most playing time of Bush's career in the postseason was ironically all 68 defensive snaps versus Philadelphia with Chicago in 2018.

Bush primarily played on special teams with Kansas City during their runs to winning Super Bowl LVII and LVIII. In the Divisional Round vs. Houston, Bush was inactive and he did not play in the AFC Championship Game against Buffalo. During the Kansas City playoff run last year, Bush played 23 defensive snaps and 85 on special teams.

At the beginning of each of the past two seasons, Bush was released after training camp and signed to the practice squad. With Kansas City resting in the last game of the regular season in 2023, Bush recorded seven tackles. Bush played 16 special teams snaps versus Houston, followed by 15 more on special teams and 10 on defense vs. Pittsburgh in 2024.

Bush is unlikely to have a major impact in Super Bowl LIX, but remains part of the lore of Miami alums participating in the Super Bowl. Miami and USC are tied for second all-time with 125 appearances by alums in the Super Bowl. Michigan is the all-time leader with 133.
