The report that Miami edge rusher Rueben Bain Jr. was involved in an alleged careless driving accident in March 2024 does not change his draft status with the Detroit Lions, per General Manager Brad Holmes. Holmes stated, "We've known that for a while, so that doesn't really change anything from our standpoint."

The Athletic reported "Bain was issued a citation for careless driving, with police saying that he “operated his vehicle in a careless or negligent manner." Destiny Betts, a passenger in the other vehicle, was not wearing a seatbelt and died from her injuries three months after the accident.

The Athletic also reported that a field sobriety test was not conducted and that the careless driving charge against Bain was dismissed as defective before Betts passed away. Bain was never charged in connection with the crash, per The Athletic.

Betts' family issued a statement to The Read Optional that stated they are working hard to find peace and move forward without seeking public attention and request privacy. The Betts family also wished Bain the best as he continues his life and career.

Where Bain is projected in the NFL Draft

The likelihood is that Bain Jr. will not be available when Detroit selects 17th in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft on April 23. Bain Jr. is projected as the seventh overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft by the NFL Mock Draft Database consensus.

Bain finished his Miami career with 121 tackles, 33.5 tackles for loss, 20.5 sacks, one interception, two passes defended and one forced fumble. Miami advanced to the College Football Championship game in large part due to the domination by Bain Jr. and edge rusher Akheem Mesidor, who played on the opposite side.
