Every fan base thinks its schedule is the hardest one going. Most of them are wrong. Miami fans, on the other hand, might actually have a case, provided you squint at it the right way and ignore a few inconvenient details along the way. Let's make the argument anyway.
Miami goes up against the last 3 ACC champions
Miami plays each of the last three ACC champions on this schedule: Duke won it all in 2025, beating Virginia 27-20 in overtime, Clemson won its ninth conference championship in 2024 and Florida State took the title in 2023.
That is three consecutive champions on one schedule, which sounds like a gauntlet right up until you remember Duke's title-winning quarterback, Darian Mensah, is now on Miami's roster. That's also not mentioning Florida State has a lot of questions surrounding the program going into 2026.
The perennial contenders
Notre Dame and Clemson (again) are two teams that show up in the national title conversation pretty much every year. Notre Dame played in the national championship game just a couple seasons ago, and Clemson has been a fixture of the sport's upper class for most of the last decade.
The Tigers are currently trying to figure out life after longtime starter Cade Klubnik, but that game should still be circled on the calendar anyway.
Miami faces the greatest coach in football history... and one of his assistants
North Carolina is coached by Bill Belichick, one of the winningest coaches in NFL history with eight total Super Bowl rings between his time as a head coach and a defensive coordinator. His first season in Chapel Hill produced an offense that averaged 19.3 points a game, which is not exactly Patriots dynasty numbers, but the matchup still demands respect because of who is on the opposing sideline.
Boston College is coached by Bill O'Brien, who worked under Belichick in New England from 2007-11 and served as offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach in 2011. O'Brien returned to that role with the Patriots in 2023.
O'Brien has also been in plenty of pressure-cooker jobs before, following Joe Paterno at Penn State and leading the Houston Texans to four playoff appearances during his time as HC there.
But it should be noted that none of that experience has translated to Chestnut Hill yet. His Eagles went from seven wins in year one to two wins in year two.
Miami will welcome in a new coach
Virginia Tech brings another respected name to the table in James Franklin, who would be on a lot of people's list of the sport's better coaches. Franklin was fired from Penn State last season before Virginia Tech scooped him up to try to fix a program that hasn't won 10 games in a season since 2016 and just finished 3-9.
He brought quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer over from Penn State as one of his first moves. The Hokies had a very promising offseason and this should be a new era for the program.
Miami plays Pitt (also known as the upset artists)
Pitt has built a reputation as college football's most chaotic upset threat. Their signature win came in 2016, when the Panthers knocked off eventual national champion Clemson as a two-touchdown underdog, needing a 48-yard field goal with six seconds left to seal it. Pitt has also been a respectable program over the last few years.
The dark horse team: Wake Forest
Wake Forest gets filed under gritty dark horse. The Demon Deacons are betting on well-traveled quarterback Gio Lopez, who is on his third school in four years, to be the difference this time.
Miami opens the season with a tough road trip
Miami opens the season at Stanford on a Friday night, which means a cross-country flight of more than 3,000 miles and a three-hour time difference. Stanford is also breaking in new head coach Tavita Pritchard after a 4-8 season, so the trip at least comes against a team still finding its footing.
CMU is a dangerous G5 matchup
The lone Group of 5 opponent, Central Michigan, plays in the same MAC that produced Northern Illinois' 16-14 upset of a fifth-ranked Notre Dame team in 2024, the first win by a MAC program over an AP top-five opponent in conference history. Notre Dame entered that game as 28.5-point favorites. Maybe Central Michigan poses a similar challenge.
Verdict on Miami's 2026 schedule
Is any of this actually the toughest schedule in the country? Certainly not. But it makes for a fun bar argument, and there are some facts in here that can help pump up Miami's schedule when Canes fans are dealing with the haters.
