After beating North Carolina State 41-7 and blowout losses by Pittsburgh and Virginia Tech, the projections for Miami beating the Hokies and Panthers improved in the ESPN Football Power Index. Miami now has a 90.2 percent chance of winning at Virginia Tech and 72.5 percent at Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh lost 37-15 to Notre Dame and Florida State beat Virginia Tech 34-14. The Panthers are 7-3 overall and 5-1 in the ACC. Pittsburgh is still in the race for an ACC Championship Game berth. The Panthers need to win out and get some help to play in Charlotte.

Virginia Tech is 3-4 since firing head coach Brent Pry following an 0-3 start. Virginia Tech interim head coach Philip Montgomery had a 43-53 record at Tulsa from 2015 through 2022. Montgomery led Tulsa to a win in the 2016 Miami Beach Bowl played at what was then known as Marlins Park.

Pittsburgh plays at Georgia Tech on Saturday. The Panthers have won five consecutive ACC games. Georgia Tech is playing its final ACC regular-season game in 2025 and will clinch a berth in its first ACC Championship Game since 2014. The Yellow Jackets appeared in four of the first 10 ACC Championship Games.

Miami needs to win out and needs a lot of help to reach the ACC Championship game. A berth in the College Football Playoff is more likely for Miami than playing in the ACC Championship Game. Miami will need losses by teams in front of them in the CFP rankings to earn a berth in the postseason tournament.

The ESPN FPI currently projects Miami with a 62.9 percent chance of winning out and 11.1 percent possibility of earning a CFP berth. If Miami wins out, they will secure consecutive 10-win seasons for the first time since they reached double figures in victories from 2000 through 2003.
