Mark Fletcher Jr. is a top-five back in the country, and it's respect that the third-team All-ACC performer deserved. But there's something that separates the Miami Hurricanes senior from the players ahead of him — clutch performances in the biggest games.
Fletcher ranked fourth on ESPN's list of top 10 running backs in college football. He was behind Ole Miss' Kewan Lacy, Florida's Jadan Baugh and Missouri's Ahmad Hardy. From a statistical standpoint, that's fair, but what this list put together by Eli Lederman and Max Olson seems to ignore is which of these players is the guy you want in your backfield when everything is on the line.

Simply put, Fletcher is the guy that has proven he can get the job done when it times to win the game. And isn't that what greatness is all about?

The stats are nice. Hardy had a banner year with Missouri and, as a fan, I hope he's fully recovered from the gunshot wound so he can have another amazing season. Baugh finished a disappointing season with a 266-yard game against Florida State. And through the regular season, Fletcher's numbers were not comparable to those guys, but once the postseason began, it was a different story.
Fletcher came through for the Hurricanes time and time again during their run to the CFP championship game. In an absolute dogfight against Texas A&M, he had the 56-yard run that set up Malachi Toney's game-winning touchdown to beat the Aggies 10-3.
"He was such a difference in the game. What he means to the team, it was a rough year for him, you know that, with the passing of his father. He never flinched, stayed with his teammates, played the game that Saturday," Mario Cristobal said after the game. "He's just the heart and soul of our football team. Everything he does is dedicated to his teammates getting better, to the team winning, and to see him just — he took over. He took over the ground game in a game where we were having a real tough time moving the football."

Miami has a deep backfield this year and Fletcher isn't going to be getting 25 carries each game like the other running backs on this list. There's going to be plenty of touches for Girard Pringle, Jordan Lyle and some other young players. But when it comes to the big games on the schedule — like the road game at Clemson and, obviously, the showdown with Notre Dame in November — that's when Fletcher is going to shine brightest. He has proven he is built for the big moments and that's when Miami si going to lean on him to carry the offense.
Fletcher might not fill up the stat sheets each week in the fall. He isn't going to feast on overmatched competition. But when it's time to compete for a championship, Fletcher is the man you want with the ball.
